A tall masted sailing ship tries to outrun a water spout in this dramatic drawing. This vintage ship image features a water spout and a heavy sea threatening two sailing ships.
I’ve seen a water spout and they are both frightening and fascinating. They are actually a tornado over water. A large group of us stood outside watching a water spout, despite the fact we shouldn’t have been doing that…it was just so fascinating to watch. It wasn’t as fierce as the one in this water spout drawing but it did give all of us an idea of the sheer force of the storm to pull thousands of gallons of water up into the air.
St. Nicholas Magazine for Boys and Girls, Vol. 5, September 1878, No. 11 included this and a number of other vintage images that you can find here on Reusable Art.
