Though one appears to be sleeping, two shepherds watch over their flocks in this wonderful border image. Taking four separate illustrations and joining them with some delicate scrollwork and doodle-like designs makes this vintage black and white border quite interesting and different.
This vintage image is from one of the many wonderful children’s books from the publishing firm Blackie & Son of Glasgow. It was included in their 1883 work A Box of Stories: Packed for Young Folks.
