At first I thought this might be Romulus and Remus playing with a pair of wolves, but as the head of the second human-like form has the head of a dog or wolf; I’m not entirely sure what this drawing is of. It is one of the better page spacers I’ve found in a while.
There’s also another great page spacer image from this book that includes the wolf-like creatures alone. There’s five animals in the Wolf Cubs Border.
James Drummond did not identify the artists who illustrated his book Highland Targets and Other Shields but we sure are lucky the 1873 work included such useful pieces like this one.
