We’ve grown quite a few green beans in our garden but I suspect this beans drawing might be a bit of an exaggeration. Granted, it’s an advertising image from an 1890 seed catalog, it does show the beans and leaves substantially larger than the bush they are growing on. One could only wish that bean plants grew and produced this well.
The Peter Henderson & Co. Tested Seeds catalog identified this beans drawing as being their “Extra Early Refugee Bean.” Not only were these bean plants prolific, but they were early and produced ‘no matter how unfavorable the season.’ It’s a shame this beans drawing is only in black and white. But, I suspect it could be fairly easily colorized with a color wash of bright greens.
Hope this vegetable image and beans drawing inspires someone to create something great with it.
