Don’t you just love the beautiful eyes and long eyelashes on this brown antelope drawing? I think there’s something almost girly and pretty about it. The horns of this animal are ringed and look like they could be effective weapons, coming to such a nice sharp point.
This colored animal drawing would be lost to history if someone, somewhere had not held onto this 1822 natural history dictionary. It was written in French by Jean Baptiste Geneviève Marcellin (1778-1846). As best I can tell, Marcellin did not identify the original artist, engraver or colorist for any of the drawings in his multi-volume work. This brown antelope drawing was from the first volume of the set.
