I love this vintage print. Can you believe it dates back to 1795? It also reminds me of a little decorative piece my grandmother had that came from Germany. It just has that European air about it.
This deer image is a block print of a pair of deer seeking cover under a wonderfully gnarled strand of trees. Whether sheltering from the sun, a predator or a curious human, we don’t know. But, I’m so glad I spotted the buck and his doe instead of thinking this was simply a tree image.
I do hope someone finds a use for this piece. It is far more detailed than many of the wood block print images I have found and one where the image is quite clear.
It is the work of John Bewick from 1795 and was used to illustrate the book The Blossoms of Morality.
