He was born in Ireland in 1769. His birthname was Arthur Wellesley. In 1814, he became the Duke of Wellington. It was the battle of Waterloo that made the Duke of Wellington a historical figure and one of those included among the many British military heroes even us Yanks know by name. He defeated Napoleon at Waterloo and thereby changed the course of European history.
Thomas E. Hill published Hill’s Album of Biography and Art in 1882. It included a number of wonderful illustrations and stock print foundry images including this Duke of Wellington portrait.
