Curliques and a hand-carved look give this public domain drop cap letter E image a solid appearance. This fancy letter E image is one of a set of letter images which also includes: A, B, C, H, I, L, M, N, O, S, T and U.
All of these letter images were included in the 1872 publicaiton A Book of Emblems with Interpretations Thereof. It remains unclear if the publishers Bell and Daldy used letters from a print foundry, they were drawn by the author Alfred Gatty (1809-1873) or they were drawn by some un-named artist.
