Doesn’t this H remind you of a castle, like on a rook in chess? It does for me. The dark black H is surrounded by purposeful doodles that soften the overall look of this fancy letter H drop cap image.
Thomas E. Hill made quite an ambitious work when he wrote Hill’s Album of Biography and Art in 1882. He did not indicate whether the artwork is from his own hand, another artist or primarily from print foundries.
