I have already included a number of Ellen Clapsaddle’s wonderful postcard images over in the vintage holiday images section of FreeVintageArt.com. But, her date of death puts her body of work firmly in the public domain throughout the world. I thought on this day before Thanksgiving in 2014 that I would share here on Reusable Art one of her charming pieces.
Clapsaddle (1865-1934) was an American artist who is most well-loved for her charming postcard illustrations. Like this hearty Thanksgiving Greeting card, many of them included small children. This card features two small children enjoying a tradition that many families participate in on Thanksgiving Day – pulling the wishbone. The charming little message that is on the face of the card states…
May your Thanksgiving
be happy,
And when the dinner
is through,
May the biggest part of the wishbone
be the end that’s held by you.
