A big sister holds her little brother’s hand as she takes him to the park to play with his hoop. In Victorian times, children loved playing with a toy hoop. Children would use a hoop that was slightly smaller than a modern hula-hoop and push it along the ground with a stick. They would run after the hoop and have hours of fun playing with this simple toy. The pair of children in this public domain drawing are dressed in green and blue with the older sister having a large muff and fancy hat topped with white feather. Both of their coats are trimmed with fur and the little boy is also wearing a hat.
Under the Window is one of the many children’s books which contained illustrations by Kate Greenaway (1846-1901). It was published in 1879.
