I’ve never been a fan of lima beans. Daddy proclaimed to like them but always buried them in ketchup. But, this vintage lima beans advertising image almost makes them look like something that might taste good.
This lima bean variety was offered in the 1890 Peter Henderson & Co. Tested Seeds catalog. It must have been one of their more popular varieties or was one they were particularly proud of since it was included in their overview page which included a large vegetables drawing.
Henderson’s Bush Lima Bean appears to have been developed in Virginia and was lauded for its bushing growth habit, early harvest and small beans. From the looks of this lima beans advertising image, it was a very productive vegetable plant as well. The picture shows a growing lima bean plant along with one of the filled pods.
