Annie Louisa was a little friend of the author. Whether or not this black and white drawing of a young girl represents the way little Annie looked is lost to history. But, her pretty dress, pantaloons and hat represent what fashionable young ladies were wearing during the days of the Civil War.
The book in which this drawing appeared, Little Mittens for The Little Darlings was identified as being copyrighted by Fanny Barrow in 1863. It is unclear if Barrow was the publisher, author, illustrator or all three.
