Classic illuminated letter M from a vintage book. Those fancy letters that monks once drew in Bibles and we now call drop caps were once called illuminated letters. This fancy letter M image has a number of different design elements all of which are dominated by the solid and dark M. Is it just me, or does the flower-like medallion and the two spirals in the middle make it look like the letter M has a mustache?
So many wonderful illustrations were included in the large work Hill’s Album of Biography and Art from 1882 by Thomas E. Hill. This is but one of them.
