Young Victorian child climbs a tree to explore a bird’s nest. She finds two blue eggs in the nest. This interesting image could be portrayed as that of a naughty child getting caught bothering the bird’s nest or as a helpful child putting an egg back into its nest. The child is wearing a red and white-striped overdress over blue. The artist only included the branches that the child is climbing on. That makes this picture both harder and easier to place in a new design.
Ida Waugh (d.1919) drew so many wonderful and charming children’s book illustrations. Here we over 100 years later enjoying her illustrations which were included in the 1881 work Holly Berries.
