Even native species, like the ostrich, suffer when the hot winds sweep across Africa. In this vintage ostrich photograph, an ostrich troop gathers together for comfort as they pant in the hot, dry air. Like other animals, the ostrich does not have the ability to sweat and panting is how they cool themselves.
This and a number of the other vintage ostrich photographs may have been taken by Annie Martin, the author of Home Life on an Ostrich Farm which was published in 1891.
