Such a handsome and stately fellow is this peregrine falcon. The peregrine is favored by falconers. It’s beauty and amazing speed are no doubt part of what makes them popular for sporting. The peregrine falcon can reach speeds well over 200 mph. They are found virtually everywhere with the noted exceptions of the extreme polar regions, very high mountains and most tropical rainforests.
This public domain drawing is part of that famous 11th edition encyclopedia. The black and white bird drawing shows the peregrine falcon standing on a small dirt pile. Perhaps they are hunting for a small meal.
