Retrievers are such interesting dogs. Hunters use them to retrieve downed prey, particularly ducks and geese. This vintage sporting image was drawn by Harrison Weir and another artist of whom I am unable to make out their signature. The book only gave recognition to Weir. It was published in 1862, when it appeared in Live Toys.
This sporting image shows the retriever in the shallows with a duck gently held in his jaw. In the distance, there’s a pair of fishermen in a small boat and a peak in the distance.
