Black and white public domain fancy letter S image. This drop cap letter S image is one of a set of letter images where the letter looks like it was carved and surrounded by curling vines. The 13 letter set of images includes the following additional letters: A, B, C, E, H, I, L, M, N, O, T and U.
All of these letter images were included in the 1872 publicaiton A Book of Emblems with Interpretations Thereof. It remains unclear if the publishers Bell and Daldy used letters from a print foundry, they were drawn by the author Alfred Gatty (1809-1873) or they were drawn by some un-named artist.
