What a sad and melancholy lady. A team of cherub’s appear to be getting ready to fix that as Cupid looks ready to let one of his arrows fly. But, with a serpent nearby, one must wonder if there is some sort of temptation or sin involved. The text where I found this sad Valentine image was written in German; otherwise I would probably know better what this drawing is supposed to represent. But, it was used as the frontispace, so even knowing the language may not have provided and answer.
The lady is standing in a lovely flower garden with tall lillies and other flowers around her. This sad Valentine would make a great coloring image or cover for a greeting card.
The book where I found this vintage image was entitled Joys and Sorrows and it was published in 1882.
