Knox shares how the native peoples he encountered in South America were quite fearful of the steam locomotives and saw them as great and powerful demons. This demon train drawing illustrates how he believes they must have viewed the first train they encountered. This image and a number of others are from the 1885 work The Boy Travellers in South America. The author, Thomas Wallace Knox (1835-1896), did not identify an illustrator.
