Sadly the artist is unknown. But, luckily for the world, his; or her, wonderful sketchbook survived. They put their pen to paper over 140 years ago. Their sketchbook is full of drawings and sketches; many of which were clearly inspired by the even older art done by European sculptors and artisans.
This upright plant sketch was clearly done in pencil. It features large, ornate leaves radiating from a central stalk with a bud emerging from the top. I’ve removed some of the foxing and other damage the years have caused and left the overage marks of age and the original smears of the artist’s graphite pencil.
To view and download this vintage upright plant sketch, just click on the one shown above. I filed it under vintage plants drawings but, you also might find similar types of Reusable Art in the leafy borders and vignettes section.
